Theme Updates and Fresh Theme Installation

To update to the most recent version of your theme, you can follow this guide:

Theme version updates are free, as long as you use the same Shopify account that you originally used to purchase your theme.

By installing, you would then have the most up-to-date functionality enabled.

View our theme changelogs here:

When you trigger the update, a wholly blank theme version using the latest possible form of the theme will be added to:

  1. Admin

  2. Online Store → Themes

The update is not applied to your current theme version, which will be totally unchanged and non-affected.

It is, therefore, important to keep the following in mind before considering a Theme Store Update:

  • Any custom coding that has been added to your current theme version, to this point, will not be transferred over to the new blank theme.

  • App code snippets may also need to be added back in.

  • Any newly available Sections may need some setting up.

  • Products and content, however, should be unaffected on the backend - they will just need to be linked back up on the storefront.

  • Settings entered in the Shopify admin, like Google tracking codes and Store name etc. would not be affected.

To clarify, this is true of all Shopify themes, both Paid and Free:

However, and to stress, your previous theme version will be completely unaffected by this process, so can either be left in place while you're building the new theme version back up or used as a reference guide if you're looking to swap to the newer theme version as quickly as possible. Alternatively, you might wish to consider waiting until the 'Sections Everywhere' Update is made to the native Shopify platform - this was promised to massively streamline the theme update process and was supposed to be released at the tail-end of 2019 but has been delayed until further notice - see the video below for more details:

If you need help with transferring custom code over from one theme to another, a coding customisation specialist would be able to assist.

You will be able to work on your new blank Theme Update in your Admin space, and will be able to ensure you that you are totally happy with it before making it Published:
